Delta's new fare sale from Charlotte to Los Angeles has the airline selling tickets between the two cities for as cheap as $242 round trip. That's a more than 50% discount from the fares offered by Delta just a few days ago and is less than half the price of United and US Airways, its other competitors on the route.

The sale began at 2 p.m. on July 22 with a sharp decrease in prices as the airline sought to increase demand on the route. Fares didn't truly bottom out, however, until the morning of July 23, when they reached lows of approximately $240 round trip.

The fare sale primarily applies to tickets with departure dates in September or October, though there are a few tickets on sale available as far out as January 2015.

These are the lowest prices we've seen on this route in months, so any travelers looking to fly from Charlotte to Los Angeles this fall would be wise to book ASAP, as we don't know how long this fare sale will last – most do not last longer than a few days.

The flights offered by Delta all include a stop in Atlanta, with total travel time on the route ranging from 6.5 hours to 7.5 hours. US Airways is the only airline that offers direct flights from Charlotte to Los Angeles, but its cheapest fares are currently selling for more than twice the price of the Delta fares now on sale. For comparison's sake, non-stop flights between the two cities have a duration of five hours and cost an additional $240.
