A United Airlines sale that began on July 8 has cut round-trip ticket prices between Dallas and Punta Cana from $631 to $286, a reduction of 55% according to Hopper’s Dallas-Punta Cana when to fly and buy report.

The sale started at 5:10pm on July 8, with prices bottoming out an hour later and remaining at that level through the afternoon of July 9. However, data scientists at Hopper advised passengers contemplating the deal to act quickly.

"This fare sale fits the profile of a flash fare sale, so we would not expect the low fares to last beyond July 10-11," said Patrick Surry, Hopper’s chief data scientist.

The timing of the sale is doubly good news for budget travelers. Most cut-price flights depart in November, at the tail-end of Punta Cana’s hurricane season, when many all-inclusive resorts are still offering low-season prices. However, this means there is a small risk of flights being canceled due to climatic conditions, so travelers should consider purchasing travel insurance that provides appropriate coverage. For travelers who prefer to visit during the excitement of peak season, some sale fares are also available in December, January and February.

United’s Dallas-Punta Cana route connects through the airline’s north-eastern hub airports, such as Washington Dulles and Newark Liberty. Consequently, passengers will have to steel themselves to long flight time of around 16 hours. If this sounds unpleasant, numerous other options are available between the two cities. Sun Country is the only airline to offer direct flights, which reduces the flight time to 4.5 hours. However, tickets on this route cost at least $765, over 2.5 times the price of United’s sale fares.

Compromise options include flying with American-US Airways, which operates flights connecting via Atlanta and Miami; these take between eight and 10 hours and cost approximately $670. Delta offers connecting flights lasting a similar time and costing only $500, but bear in mind that, with only 6% of the market share according to Hopper’s technical report on the route, your options for when to fly out and return will be limited if you choose to fly with Delta.
