September 24: Cathay Pacific Launches Fall Sale to Asia from New York, Chicago and Los Angeles

Cathay Pacific has launched a fall sale from New York, Chicago and Los Angeles to select cities in Asia that has the airline slashing prices by up to 40% from its normal fares, according to Hopper's when to fly and buy reports on the routes.

The fare sale started on September 23, will run for exactly one week, until September 30, and is offering discounted seats on departure dates from now until November 30. The sale is valid only on flights from the three American cities to Bali, Bangkok, Guangzhou, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Manila, Siem Reap and Singapore, with prices ranging from $824 to $890, round trip.

As Cathay Pacific is Hong Kong's flag carrier, only the flights to Hong Kong are direct. The rest will connect in Hong Kong before travelers can continue onward to their final destination. The flight time from New York to Hong Kong is 15 hours 45 minutes, Chicago to Hong Kong is 15 hours 15 minutes and Los Angeles to Hong Kong is 14 hours.

Cathay Pacific is one of several airlines that offer free international stopovers in some circumstances, so travelers interested in visiting Hong Kong and another Asian city should ask the airline to see if a stopover is available.

It's worth noting that while this sale on Cathay Pacific flights offers discounts of up to 40%, Cathay Pacific is a luxury airliner – it was recently named the world's best airline by Sktrax – and its fares are often higher than competing airlines.

"What this sale is really offering is a way to fly to Asia on an amazing airline at the same or a little lower cost than with another airline," said Patrick Surry, the chief data scientist at Hopper.

"On the Los Angeles to Manila route, for example, Cathay Pacific is selling flights connecting in Hong Kong for $863 round trip, while China Southern is selling flights connecting in Guangzhou for $718. Before this sale, the premium to fly on Cathay Pacific would have been much higher, an extra $416."

For other routes, however, the on-sale Cathay Pacific flights are also the cheapest options available. From Chicago to Bali, for example, Cathay Pacific is now $323 cheaper than United, which is the next cheapest carrier.
