Perhaps you’ve heard of the legendary nightlife; the day-time cocktails on the decks of the luxurious resorts of the Hotel Zone; the pumping open-air bars perched over Cancun’s lagoon; the Mexican mariachi spots nestled on Yaxchilan Avenue. Maybe you’re just in need of a strong dose of sun, Yucatan style, a jaunt along those fabled Caribbean beachfronts, or a taste of real Mexican food laden with chillies and habaneros to boot.
Well, whatever your reason for wanting to leave the hubbub of LA behind for a holiday in Cancun, we at hopper don’t blame you! In fact, that’s why we’ve put together this list of top tips for finding cheap flights from Los Angeles to Cancun. Enjoy!

Don’t leave it too late to grab your seats into Cancun this year, because prices soar to all-time highs within 10 days before the desired departure date. The best time to nab your ticket is actually just over 20 days before leaving, when we found fares ebb almost $70. That’s a huge saving that still leaves fliers plenty of time to decide on their hotels, clean out their cameras ready for cliff top Tulum and Chichen Itza, or brag to friends about their jaunt down to the Mexican Yucatan.
As ever it’s mid-week departures that will save travelers out of Los Angeles the most this year, leaving just a little bit more in the bank for those strong rum punches at Senor Frog's or the legendary O' Ultra Lounge by the sea. We estimate a saving on average of around $15, which is just a smidgen better than leaving the bustle of LA on a Monday, a Saturday or a Sunday. Perhaps surprisingly, Thursday departures are the most expensive, with flight prices peaking at just over $500.
We found that searching for fares on flights from LAX to Cancun returns more expensive flights later in the week, leaving Monday with the best range of bargain deals and Saturday with the most expensive seats by far. So, why not combat those Monday blues and nab yourself a super-cheap $478 return to the sun, sea, sand and frivolity of Cancun, saving as much as $16 in the process and leaving yourself a little more money to spend on the strip!
Granted this tip is a little cheeky, because LAX is actually the only airport in the city of Los Angeles with direct flight connections into Cancun. However, there’s no question that seats on the five-hour hop across the continent from LAX are cheaper than taking indirect routes from either Burbank, Long Beach or Santa Ana, where fares have been known to soar to over $600 on the route and tickets can be harder to come by. In short, stick to trusty LAX!
Fliers out of Los Angeles International really do have the pick of the bunch when it comes to booking their flight into Cancun this year, because we found that all of Delta Airlines, Virgin America and United have fantastically priced deals on the route. All of their fares come in at an average of $487 round trip, leaving travelers to choose their favorite carrier, or simply the cheapest of the three on their selected departure date. That mojito in the sun just got a little sweeter!
Airlines offering direct flights from Los Angeles to Cancun:- Delta makes the journey in 5 hours for $487 round trip, on average.- United makes the journey in 5.5 hours for $487 round trip, on average.- Virgin America makes the journey in 5.5 hours for $487 round trip, on average.
If that busy LA lifestyle just won’t allow you time to shop around for flights and you’re finding it hard to organize that much-needed break to the papaya-shaded beaches of Cancun, then why not trust in Hopper’s When to Fly and Buy Reports page instead? It takes more than 7 million pieces of data from individual searches right across the internet, to bring would-be fliers on the route from LAX detailed information about the cheapest seats, departure dates and booking times.
Fashion-conscious LA locals are often loathe to part with any piece of their holidaying wardrobe, especially when a jaunt to the stylish drinking joints and beachside promenades of Caribbean Cancun is in order. So, why not take it all with you this year with a little checked in baggage on your flight? Maybe throw in a meal and a celebratory cocktail on-board while you’re at it? Head over to our Airline Fees Calculator to see what extra charges apply for additional services like these on all of the carriers flying from LAX to Cancun.
Bargain hunters who’ve been wooed into contemplating a trip to Cancun this year by the prospect of bagging a super-cheap flight for just $390 would do well to remember that it’s only the luckiest of fliers that usually manage to grab those seats. A vast majority of passengers actually pay full-price for tickets on the route, which soars to numbers in excess of $550! That’s why we recommend settling on anything at or under $478 return, which is generally speaking a great deal for the journey.
