Sport is Auburn's passion, focused around Auburn University and its vast 80,000-seat stadium, where the Auburn Tigers football team plays in the SEC. Golf is also an enormously popular pastime and there are several great courses in and around the cities. As well as watching sports, the towns are good at celebrating sports, whether during the tailgating parties at the stadium or at one of the many sports bars.

Auburn is accessible from Atlanta and Birmingham airports, which are both around 120 miles away.

Go to a tailgate party at Toomer's Corner

For much of the week, Toomer's Corner is a relatively quiet spot, an understated monument marking the transition from downtown Auburn onto the university campus. But after a victory for the Auburn Tigers it erupts into activity, as sports fans and tailgaters gather to party and celebrate.

A gorgeous lakeside setting at the Grand National Golf Course

Golf is so important to the local area that it is even shown in the logo for the Auburn Chamber of Commerce. Of the several courses close to Auburn, the best is probably the Grand National, which is part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Set in breathtaking surroundings beside the 600-acre Saugahatchee Lake, players stroll among the trees along its shoreline. A round is pleasantly affordable, too.

Explore the woodland and waterways of Chewacla State Park

Stream-threaded woodland, a string of pretty waterfalls, a swimming lake and several hiking trails make up Chewacla State Park, located just outside Auburn. The lake is well-equipped with a floating dock and an eight-foot high diving platform, and there's a colourful old-fashioned playground and some great mountain biking routes.

Simple and satisfying food in an exuberant setting at Niffer's Place

This bright diner-style restaurant serves burgers, chicken wings, corn nuggets and other classically American fare in a fun atmosphere. It's great for kids, with colorful drawings adorning chalkboards and a resident magician and balloon artist. And there's fun for adults, too, with frequent beer and trivia nights.

A blend of tradition and modern comforts define the Hotel at Auburn University

This is a nice and comfortable hotel on the grounds of Auburn University that offers a wide range of rooms and suites from the deluxe to the more affordable. The hotel has a good cafe and hosts the Ariccia Italian restaurant; a pool, a fitness room and several pet-friendly guestrooms.
