With 2025 in full swing, millions of Americans are already planning for their leisure trips and vacations this year. Despite households across the United States still grappling with a higher cost of living, travel expenditure is set to expand for nearly 1 in 4 travelers in 2025.
Most Americans (53%) plan to keep their travel expenditure about the same in 2025 compared to last year, while 23% intend to increase their travel expenditure. One in five Americans plan to spend less on travel than they did in 2024, while just 3% do not plan to travel at all.
Examining travel intentions for 2025 by generation reveals that the youngest adult travelers, Gen Z, will lead the growth in travel expenditure this year. Just over 1 in 4 Gen Zers who traveled last year plan to increase their expenditure this year, a higher rate than any other generation.
Americans continue to signal that they plan to prioritize expenditure on experiences like travel even as millions of American households continue to struggle with the impacts of inflation and higher interest rates on cost of living. More than half of travelers in every income range are still planning to maintain or expand their travel expenditure this year.
84% of the highest income households, earning $150,000 or more per year, are planning to maintain or expand their travel expenditure in 2025. More surprisingly however, 22% of households earning the least, under $35,000 per year, are planning to spend more on travel next year and 46% are planning to keep their travel expenditure the same. It’s clear that American travelers, no matter their household income, plan to continue investing in travel and experiences this year.
