Valentine’s Day Travel Report

Travelers looking to take a romantic getaway for Valentine’s Day should expect to pay as much as 2021, but domestic airfare is still down 27% and 30% from 2020 and 2019 respectively.

Flights

  • For those booking flights last minute, domestic and international airfare for Valentine’s Day weekend are relatively equal to Valentine’s Day 2021 prices.

  • Domestic: Prices are currently $252/round-trip, roughly equal for domestic flights YoY from 2021, but down 27% and 30% from 2020 and 2019 respectively.

  • International: International airfare for Valentine’s Day weekend is currently $625/round-trip, also equal YoY from 2021. That figure marks a 21% decrease from $795/round-trip this time in 2020 (again we’d still consider this pre-pandemic) and a 26% decrease from $845/round-trip this time in 2019. 

Hotels

  • Travelers should expect hotels to average $179/night nationally for Valentine’s Day weekend, up 38% from $130/night last year.

  • The highest trending destinations among our users for Valentine’s Day weekend were Los Angeles, CA (#1), Great Smoky Mountains, TN (#2), and Atlantic City, NJ (#3).  Los Angeles likely topped the list since the weekend of The Big Game also falls on Valentine’s Day weekend this year. The city saw a 55% increase in nightly rates for hotel stays on Valentine’s Day weekend compared to prices for the weekends prior. 


Valentine’s Day falls on Monday, February 14th, 2022. We refer to Valentine’s Day weekend as the days between Friday, February 11th and Monday, February 14th. 

Flights

Prices are currently $252/round-trip. Domestic prices for Valentine’s Day weekend are equal YoY from 2021, 27% down from $345/round-trip this time in 2020 (which we would still consider pre-pandemic since Covid-19 really hit the U.S. air market closer to March 2020), and 30% down from $362/round-trip this time in 2019. 

International airfare for Valentine’s Day weekend is currently $625/round-trip, also equal YoY from 2021. That figure marks a 21% decrease from $795/round-trip this time in 2020 (again we’d still consider this pre-pandemic) and a 26% decrease from $845/round-trip this time in 2019. 

Hotels

Since most travelers will check-in to their hotel before Valentine’s Day itself, we looked at hotel prices with check-ins from Thursday through Saturday ahead of Valentine’s Day. In 2022, we’re currently seeing hotel prices averaging $179/night for Valentine’s Day weekend, up 38% from $130/night this time last year.  

At $179/night, Valentine’s Day is 7% more expensive than other weekends in February, which we’re seeing average $167/night.

Trending Destinations

The highest trending destinations among our users for Valentine’s Day weekend were Los Angeles, CA (#1), Great Smoky Mountains, TN (#2), and Atlantic City, NJ (#3).  Los Angeles likely topped the list since the weekend of The Big Game also falls on Valentine’s Day weekend this year. The city saw a 55% increase in nightly rates for hotel stays on Valentine’s Day weekend compared to prices for the weekends prior. The Southeast had the most trending destinations among Hopper users searching for Valentine’s Day weekend.
